SUMMARY:Environment Seminar: Rapid increase in urban sprawl in Montreal: What is our vision for the future and how could a greenbelt get us there
DESCRIPTION:Current trends in land uptake for urban development across the planet contradict the principles of sustainability. Urban planning has not been able to stop urban sprawl. Urban sprawl causes loss of fertile farmland\, soil sealing\, and loss of ecological soil functions. It results in higher car dependency\, higher greenhouse gas emissions\, higher infrastructure cost for transport and water supply\, and the degradation of many ecosystem services. Urban sprawl in Montreal has increased dramatically in the last 60 years. Without the implementation of rigorous measures\, sprawl is likely to increase strongly in the future. To address this issue\, greenbelts and the densification of existing built-up areas have been proposed. In what landscape and cityscape do we want to live in the future? How could a greenbelt help? How effective have greenbelts been in other cities?    \nDr. Jochen Jaeger is an Associate Professor in the Department of Geography\, Planning and Environment at Concordia University. His research interests are mostly in landscape ecology\, road ecology\, and environmental assessment. Examples of research projects in his lab include trends of urban sprawl across the planet and the effectiveness of greenbelts at reducing urban sprawl. Other recent research projects address the need for better consideration of ecological connectivity in environmental impact assessments and the question of how long wildlife fences along highways need to be to effectively reduce wildlife mortality on roads. Most recently\, a team in his lab developed a predictive model for high-risk mortality zones for turtles on roads in Quebec. Dr. Jaeger is looking forward to discussing with you the environmental issues of proliferating urban sprawl and rapid road construction.

SUMMARY:Social Science Week
DESCRIPTION:The Social Science programme is once again offering a week of talks on a variety of topics that will be of interest to the entire college community. Social Science Week will take place between February 12-16. \nPlease review the line-up for the week in the programme. \nSocial Science Week is an opportunity for students to see what contemporary Social Scientists are up to and to learn more about the many pathways Social Science study can lead to. It is also a moment to reflect deeply on the most meaningful questions we face at this point in history\, questions about climate catastrophe\, our rapidly changing media landscapes\, art-making and race-relations\, and how to think about conflict\, both locally and abroad. These talks invite students and faculty to step out of the constraints of the traditional classroom\, and into conversations about the world that is and the world that is to come

SUMMARY:AR Cité - Join the Tour this Thurs!
DESCRIPTION:Over the past 3 years dozens of Dawson students\, faculty and staff have been involved in the AR Cité Augmented Reality project.  We are very proud to have produced the AR Cité mobile app as well as the dozens of location-specific vignettes that teach us about the hidden stories that are all around us.   The app can be used as active pedagogy in classes\, for special events or whenever you’d like to discover a hidden story on campus or in the hood. \nWe’ll meet in Olivers (2C.17) at 3pm and then head outdoors around the campus grounds and surrounding streets where Nancy Rebelo (History) and I will give an approx. 30min tour (fingers crossed for good weather\, otherwise we do have a plan B). \nYou can also go ahead and download the app from the app stores and try it yourself\, anytime. \nHope to see you on Thursday!

SUMMARY:Orange Shirt Day Event - A screening of the medium-length film The Kablona Keepers (69min)
DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, September 25 at 10am in 5B.16: A screening of the medium-length film The Kablona Keepers (69min) \nThis film is an intimate portrait of the dynamic Indigenous community that succeeded in protecting the remote Sacred Headwaters\, known as the Klabona\, in northwest British Columbia from industrial activities. Spanning 15 years of matriarch-led resistance\, the film follows a small group of determined elders in the village of Iskut as they heal from the wounds of colonization to push back against law enforcement\, the government\, and some of the world’s largest multinational companies. Nestled between scenes of stand-offs and blockades\, land defenders reflect on how their history of forced displacement\, residential schools\, and trauma strengthened their resolve to protect the very land that was so essential to their healing journey. Here’s a trailer for this 2022 documentary.

SUMMARY:Orange Shirt Day Event - A screening of the medium-length film Another Word for Learning (73min)
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, September 26 at 2pm in 5B.16: A screening of the medium-length film Another Word for Learning (73min) \nThis 2019 documentary examines the disconnect between the contemporary colonial educational system and Indigenous communities\, in light of Canada’s Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the painful legacy of the Sixties Scoop. The film spotlights the story of 11 year old Aisha\, a Kwakwaka’wakw girl who is navigating choices on her schooling while living in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. Along the way\, Aisha is guided by her mother—Vancouver-based radio host\, producer and activist Gunargie O’Sullivan—as she explores alternative modes of learning while asserting her Indigenous sense of identity and knowledge.
