Generation Z: A New Generation of Students Emerging from a Society in Transition

October 18 @ 2:30 pm - 4:00 pm

Presenter: Josée Garceau (Historian, author, researcher, and consultant on generational differences)

Now that education professionals have made every effort to understand and adapt to Generation Y students, there is a new generation of students with expectations and behaviors different from those of their predecessors. Having grown up in a technological and hyper-connected environment, influenced by social networks and the online world, these students arrive with different world-views and values than those of the teachers who accompany them. We will compare the two generations of students in our learning environments; explain the impact of ubiquitous technologies on human relationships; examine the effects on in-person communication skills; understanding the development of identity and other elements that have an impact on learning. A comparison of teacher and student expectations will help us to identify possible solutions that promote constructive teacher-student interactions.
