This co-facilitated 1.5 hour workshop designed for New Faculty but open to all, briefly presents several causes of student behavioral challenges and focuses on ways to proactively manage them. Several active learning techniques that help build classroom community and cultivate engaged students will be showcased, as well as specific active learning techniques that put a positive spin on cell phones in the class. Faculty are invited to participate in a demonstration of this activity, and encouraged to bring and use their own cell phones. The workshop will conclude with a small group activity where participants will be given the opportunity to individualize these activities for their own courses.
At the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:
- Identify some causes of student behavioral challenges and have a plan to proactive manage them.
- Apply (at least one) active learning activities to proactively manage class behavior and cultivate student engagement.
