ALC Arts & Culture Fall 2018 Gala

December 7 @ 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Free

For the ALC Arts & Culture Profile IA Gala of Fall 2018, experience the world through the gaze of eight female artists as they grapple with introspection and representation of the self—an island in itself— as both a physical and metaphorical place of expression.

Island; eye-land, I land — Playfully broken down, the word Island denotes many simultaneous meanings. Whether it is, in itself, a physical space, an oasis along the horizon or a lonely rock, or space in the mind, a conception of self filtered through one’s own gaze or even that of the abstract ‘other’, ILAND underscores notions of duality; concurrent feelings of hopefulness and sorrow, a defined sense of self or the growing pains of self-discovery, comfort versus discomfort. The metaphysical idea of identity and questions that arise from it—the who’s, what’s, where’s and why’s of being human and growing up in the world, of finding purpose and meaning within it—are connected, explored and represented through various media (3D installation, digital media, painting, music, drawing and collage) in both individual and collaborative pieces.
